Well I
can tell you that it is a fact that shopping trolley handles are over
three times dirtier than public toilet handles and door knobs.
The Korea Consumer Protection Board carried out a survey on 120 items
found in public facilities were people commonly touch with there hands.
This survey was carried out in Seoul and nearby cities.
According to the Korea Times newspaper, the board examined 20 hand
straps on trains, 20 hand straps on buses, 20 toilet doorknobs at four
department stores, 20 lift buttons at four department stores, 20 handles
of shopping trolleys are four stores and 20 mouse's at four internet
cafes.
The results are as follows.
C.F.U stands for Colony Forming Units
1. Shopping Trolley handles- 1100 CFU per 10sq cm
2. Internet cafe computer mouse- 690 CFU per 10sq cm
3. Bus hand straps - 380 CFU per 10sq cm
4. Public toilet handles and door knobs 340 CFU per 10sq cm
5. Lift buttons at 130 CFU per 10sq cm
6 Train hand straps 86 CFU per 10sq cm
The survey found that shopping trolley handles to be the worst of the worst.
Typically, they contained an average of 1100 colony forming units (CFU) of
bacteria per 10sq cm
Quoting statistics, the spokeswomen said that while more than 77% of people were
aware of the importance of washing hands, on 47.9% actually bothered to wash
them.

Specifically carts that are retrieved from
the streets, often times in the possession of homeless people, were
immediately put back into service, without being cleaned.
