Safety Turtle

What is the Safety Turtle ?

Safety Turtle® is a family of Wireless Alert products designed to enhance security in the home and in the workplace.

The Base Station

base stationThe Base Station is the component of the Safety Turtle wireless alert system which sounds the alarm. All Safety Turtle wireless systems require at least one Base Station. Safety Turtle sensors have no audible or visual outputs, so serve no useful function without a Base Station. There is no limit to the number of base station you have, as they will all alarm at the same time if there are in range of the sensor. This allows you to expand the area of alarm audibility or increase the total sensor coverage area or both.

The Wrist Band

wrist bandThe wrist band is a water sensing device manufactured in the shape of a Turtle, it is locked onto the Childs wrist with a special key that stops the Safety Turtle being accidentally removed during vigorous play. It has also been designed that it won't false alarm by splashing water or a spilt Childs drink. It will however go into full alarm mode if submerged in any form of water (See limitations on salt water).

The Safety Turtle comes in two colours for use in Europe, the colours are Light Green or light blue  any other colour is for the American market and works on a different frequency and has a lot less range than the European model. The American unit 318MHz has a range of 60 meters line of sight, where as the European unit 433 MHz has a range of 120 meter line of sight. The European Safety Turtle will work in America as long as you have the correct adaptor, these can be sent with the Safety Turtle if requested.

If you are offered any other colour than Light Blue or Light Green they are for the American Market and although they will work, they do not have the same range as the European model. (see above)

child by poolThere is no limitations in how many wrist bands go back to the same base station(s) but they must be the same colour. You can only mix Safety Turtle colours if you had two base stations corresponding to two different colour bands.

The base station knows what colour band it is assigned to by a miniature Turtle that plugs into the front of the base station. (See above)

The Features of the Base Station and Safety Turtle wrist bands are as follows.

  • Safety Turtle works with ALL Fresh Water, natural [lake, river and pond] or man made [pool, hot tub and pond].
  • No installation required.
  • A loud alarm instantly sounds at the Base Station when the Turtle is immersed in water. The alarm continues to sound until it is reset.
  • Rain or light spray won't trigger the alarm.
  • Children enjoy wearing the colourful Turtle Wristbands.
  • The Turtle Wristband locks securely around a child's wrist, using the key provided.
  • The Turtle is permanently sealed and rugged to withstand children's play.
  • The Turtle has a battery life of 3 – 4 years
  • A child wearing his/her Turtle is protected even while the pool is in use or is being cleaned. There is no need to ever “turn off” the system.
  • Safety Turtle is easily portable, and with the Turtle Power battery pack / weatherproof bag accessory, can be used anywhere.
  • The Safety Turtle system can be progressively expanded through the purchase of additional sensors(s) of the same colour.
  • Unlike other pool alarms, Safety Turtle can alert if your child falls in an immediate neighbours pool, spa or garden pond

Question and Answers

Q. Why do I need the Safety Turtle

The reason you need the Safety Turtle is that it takes 2 seconds for a child to drown and 2inches of water to drown in. Most accidents and deaths occur while the child is being supervised and in the majority of the time the child is only missing for a very short duration. The Safety Turtle does not take over your duty as a parent to safeguard your children but it increases your layers of protection.

Q. What do I need

If you are going on holiday to a Villa, you need a Base Station and however many wrist bands to the number of children you want to protect. If you are going to a Hotel with a pool or want to go out of the confines of your villa to a water park or boating, you will require the battery pack. This makes the system totally portable and allows you to safeguard your children where ever you go.

Q. Is the Safety Turtle just for holidays

No the Safety Turtle is for any time you think there is a danger that your children could be around water. That could be your back garden pond or even your neighbours pond, the Childs paddling pool or some thing as meaningless as a garden bucket filled with rain water.

Q. How long will the Turtle last

The Safety Turtle comes with a battery that is permanently sealed with in its self, if used under normal use, the manufacturer says that it will last 3-4 years. It can be tested before use by putting the Base station in test mode and dipping the Turtle in water, this will set off the Base station in low volume and insure you that the Safety Turtle is in full working order. (See operating instructions)

Q. What plug does it come with

It comes with a European plug due to the fact that most people purchase the Safety Turtle to use whilst abroad on holiday. However if you have purchased the Safety Turtle for the UK or even once off holiday want to use it at home, we will provide free of charge a converter that can be used to change the plug back to a 3 pin UK type.

Q. How big is the whole kit

The Safety Turtle system comes with its own weather proof carry bag and the Base Station, Safety Turtles and Battery pack (if purchased) all fit in the bag. The bag is about half the size of a shoe box and only weighs about 2kg, it is easily portable and can go in side a case with your holiday cloths.

Q. Will my child wear the wrist band

The wristband has been designed to appeal to children. Feedback from customers indicates that children enjoy wearing the wristband. In many cases after the wristband has been taken off for supervised swimming or bathing, children will remind their parents to lock the wristband back on again.

Q. At what age can you use the Safety Turtle

The Safety Turtle can be used as soon as your child starts to crawl, the standard kit comes with a 20cm locking wristband which can be adjusted to suit the babies wrist.

Q. What is waterlogged

waterlogged, this is common for pet owners who use the wrong strap. Always uses velcro pet strap to attach Turtle to pet collar, never child wrist strap. Attach to top side of collar, not bottom.
One of your Turtles has a "memory" of being in water. We call this "waterlogging". The problem is reversible if the Turtle is kept dry for a couple of days.

Here are some tips moving ahead:

- never store Turtle in a plastic bag or sealed container Turtles need to breathe
- keep oily or creamy substances or saliva from getting between the Turtle shells
- always remove wristband before bathing or taking your child/pet in pool
- use only Terrapin velcro "pet adaptor" strap to attach Turtle to upper side of pet collar
- once pool coverage has been tested first time, subsequently test by immersing only half the Turtle. This tests sensitivity and makes turn off almost immediate.
- immediately after each immersion, absorb water between Turtle shells, which adheres tightly by surface tension
- remove Wristband from infant or 1 year old sleeping in crib [teething/drooling may not immediately set off alarm, but it can cause "waterlogging"]
- avoid testing Turtle under tap or pool or spa outlet
- dry first Turtle before immersing a second
- avoid unplugging Base Station while it is alarming
- if alarming will not stop with normal tissue drying, gently insert a blotter [such as corner of a business card] in the cavities [on both sides of the circuit board] between corners of the Turtle shells, so as to draw off trapped moisture
- blow drying [with heater off] is a last resort
- for pet or adult use, consider pet sock accessory to cover Turtle

A non waterlogged Turtle fully immersed briefly in still water should be dryable within 5 - 20 seconds max. A little practice should give you confidence. But Turtle first needs to "dry out".

A waterlogged Turtle can be identified by wrapping suspect Turtle(s) in aluminum foil, away from Base Station. If pressing moon-shaped button completely silences alarm, the culprit is wrapped in foil, or has ceased transmitting. The system can then be used while the problem Turtle dries inside the foil.
